Junior Communicators' Course Graduation

News from the Pinetown Schools Forum

Graduation day at PSPS.  If you had been in the Resource Centreat Pinetown Senior Primary on Friday 5th of September you would have been caught up in the tension, excitement and sheer nervousness of twelve Grade 7 pupils – I swear you could hear the butterflies- as they prepared to present a session in which each of them gave a prepared speech and between them they facilitated the whole session. Teachers, parents and the principle Brigid Barnes  and the lucky youngsters who will be part of the next group packed the venue.

The Junior Communicators had been carefully coached by Rehana Laher, President of the communication and public speaking organization Speakout  and they really showed how much work had been put into the course.  Rehana  generouslygave of her time, expertise and sheer love of the children for this activity which was sponsored by your Rotary club as part of its Pinetown Schools Forum.

Junior Communicators' Course

Rehana Laher from Speakout has started the first of two 7 week courses for Junior Communicators with Grade 7 learners at Pinetown Senior Primary School. They meet every Friday afternoon and have already learned about the importance of body language, eye contact, pausing and projecting their voices. They also learn not to “umm and err” so we may eventually get some politicians who do not seem to be thinking on their feet!

Each learner has their own Speakout File of which they are very proud and they really are doing their homework. When I was there last Friday they started planning their first speeches and next week will present them for evaluation. This is really serious stuff!

Their Graduation Ceremony, at which they will chair the full meeting and each present thie speech as well as receive their certificates is on the 6th of September. Please come along 12. 15 for 12.30 in the school hall and support this initiative.
